Gentlemen’s Fly Fishing Day

After an unbearable long fishing abstinence of almost 7 days, I finally managed to undertake a superb gentlemen’s fly fishing day with Remo, André and Laika.

This time my long-time fishing buddy André and Remo with whom I fished the very first time, met for some small stream action in Switzerland. I arrived earlier than the two lads and went already to the stream to make some observations. The weather was rather cold and I only spotted one small trout rising supposedly for a mayfly. They are usually pretty abundant in this stream. My ringing phone brought me back to reality and I went back to the car where I met the other gentlemen.

Not only Remo and André were on tour with me, but also Laika – André’s lovely dog. She was visibly happy to be outdoors and wallowed in the meadow, while we made our way down. At the river, I offered Remo to try first, but he declined so I started to fish the pool. Due to the low surface action, I decided to start with an indicator nymph rig, which is aptly adaptable to the depth needed. This is a huge advantage in comparison to the hopper-dropper rig that cannot be changed swiftly to greater depths.

Within minutes I caught two small fish that took the Copper Tom nymph – a stunner fly! After this promising start Remo and André tried the same pool, but only André convinced another trout for a visit. We ventured on, but the fishing was rather slow. Given the size of the river with many low hanging branches, the obstacles took their tribute and we lost several flies.

Continuing upstream we came by a several good-looking pools but only a few fish could be tricked. At this stage, André, who had packed an entire kitchen, decided to venture ahead and prepare lunch for us. What a service! Half an hour later André was ready and he even took a little coffee maker with him. What a superb gentlemen’s fly fishing day.

Gentlemen’s Fly Fishing Afternoon

After lunch we continued upstream and thoroughly fished the bridge pool. During previous trips this pool had proofed very difficult and you easily spook fish. The fish neglected my size 14 dry fly, but when I changed it to a size 18 Royal Wulff, they bit eagerly. In the end, we managed to catch two more trout on the dry.

At around 5 o’clock we had to get back to our cars in order to be on time for the Fly Friday at the Fischen.ch shop in Langenthal to tie the flies we had lost to the stream.
